How are birds able to survive in cold weather?

Posted in amazing birds  on February 8th, 2010 by: admin

I’m amazed at how the little birds in my gardens are surviving,
Is there a high survival rate, or do many perish in the winter months?

Thank you for your help :)

Most birds are insulated with feathers that keep them warm. They will fluff up their feathers and appear fat to conserve body heat. They also turn their heads backward and tuck them into their feathers and keep one leg up to conserve body heat while sleeping. Wildbirds are very smart and can seek shelter in trees and bushes. Wildbirds are much hardier than you think.

How do small birds survive a snowstorm? Where do they hide?

Posted in cute birds  on February 8th, 2010 by: admin

As many of you know, the east coast is getting walloped with a lot of snow. Today in the Boston area, there will be blizzard like conditions for a few hours. As I was looking out my window, I saw a couple of cute small birds on the branches. Where will they hide when this windy snowstorm hits?

It is natural for them to hide, they find places so they do not catch the storm chimneys or bushes the bush in my front yard is crazy the chirping is unreal there must be 100 birds in there funny..they find warm places..thats why you see people putting food out on the snow they can’t dig so maybe you can put a bird feeder out its fun…

I have a question about Birds?? (Very funny)?

How do birds have sex do they do it the same way humans do?

Or do they just get real close 2 each other? Because they have babies so they have 2 do something.

The male’s sperm, produced in the testes, passes to the cloaca where it is stored until copulation (act of sex). The female also has a cloaca that leads from the ovaries. The female bird unfans her tail, moves it to one side while the male climbs up onto her back or gets close to her. Their cloacas are pressed together and the sperm moves from the male to the female. This act is called a cloacal kiss.

The sperm is stored by the female for at least a week, in some species over a hundred days. Then as each ovum from the ovary moves into the oviduct, it gets fertilized with the stored sperm, producing a clutch of many eggs, all with the sperm from that one cloacal kiss.

There are a few species of birds where the males do possess a retractable penis that can be pulled back into the bird. These birds include ostriches, cassowaries, kiwis, swans, geese, and ducks. Since waterfowl sometimes make love while in the lake or pond, the penis helps ensure that the sperm is not washed away by the water.

Sperm can be transferred from male cloaca to the female in a blink of an eye – less than a second. Some birds seem to want to linger longer though, sometimes having sex for more than an hour! And, although it is not necessary to copulate frequently since the sperm is stored within the female, remember those hormones are still making the birds excited. Many pairs of birds will mate numerous times within a few days.

Other Answers:
The male sit on female and with his mouth he handle the head of female and put it’s maleorgan in female’s back and with in secinds the game will over.I saw it on nationalgoegraphy.

sort of like humans except they do not do it face to face but the mechanics are the same.
the male bird stands on top of the female’s back…

Going crazy trying to find this video of birds dancing in jungle?

Posted in crazy birds  on February 8th, 2010 by: admin

I saw it about a year ago but now i cant find it, it has birds dancing in a jungle and the backround music is a version of the imperial march from star wars it features the bird of paradise. it may even be a commercial im not sure if anyone has any idea what its called or where i could find it it would be much appreciated thanks

If you didn’t clear out your cache since then, you might
be in luck. There are actually two different things which
you can do to find a video you have previously watched.
Not only that, you can make your results appear either
in alphabetical or chronological order:

ALPHABETICALLY (every possible result):
highlight the URL address bar on top, then simply type
in the word "youtube". From those results, you will see:
– every YouTube address you typed
– every YouTube channel you visited
– every YouTube video you watched
but it will be ugly YouTube code like "v=Ab1Cd2eF3Gh".

CHRONOLOGICALLY (not as many results):
simply click on your internet browser’s "History" button
or tap "CTRL" and the letter "H" on your keyboard, and
you will get a daily list of every website which you have
visited. Every YouTube video will be mixed in with all of
the different websites, but it’ll actually be easier for you
to find what you’re looking for — because everything will
be displayed in "plain" English. And because each and
every YouTube video is in fact its own website, you will
also be able to see the full title of each video.

I hope that my double answer is somewhat helpful to U.

How do birds know when to return to the north for mating season?

Posted in birds  on February 8th, 2010 by: admin

I am asking this question for my husband. He wants to know how a bird that flys south for the winter knows when to fly north for mating season.

Example: the Red Breasted Robin flys south for the winter months and then returns north in the early springtime to nest.

What instincts, or what in nature tells the birds to return to the north?

We both thank you for any and all answers in advance.

There are both "proximate" and "ultimate" causes to why a bird migrates. It can deal with shortening or lengthing of daylight, food supply, celestial cues (stars), hormones, etc. I added some links that will hopefully help you two understand migration a bit more.

How are birds flying high above able to distinguish between food and non-food items?

Posted in amazing birds  on February 5th, 2010 by: admin

As I sit at the beach week after week, it amazes me that the sea birds can tell when someone is holding a sandwich versus a cell phone and dive down and take the food from someone’s hand, but never attempt to take any non-food items. How do they know the difference?

Most birds have excellant eyesight.

What would be cute names for my two new birds?

So dwarves shall die

How to get rid of a crazy bird!?

Posted in crazy birds  on February 5th, 2010 by: admin

Four 5 wks now we have a male cardinal trying to get into our house. From sunup to sundown every 15 seconds it hits a window. It’s not something he sees as he goes around the house and takes turns hitting each and every window. It doesn’t matter if the shade is up or down. It doesn’t matter if it is sunny or cloudy. He even hits the skylights! Aside from euthanasia are there any suggestions on how to get him to leave?

This is very common during the breeding season..birds become very territorial at this time of year and sometimes think their reflection in a window is an intruder in their area and they will try and attack it. Also, some birds will just see a window as an extension of the sky and try to fly into it..birds don’t understand glass. You need to make your windows less reflective to solve the problem and to keep the bird from injuring or killing itself. Close blinds, curtains, etc. or put some decals on the window so the bird knows there is a barrier there. Here are some helpful websites to get birds to stop this behavior that will help you:

How to kill birds that eat my dogs food and drink my dogs water?

Posted in birds  on February 5th, 2010 by: admin

I know that birds carry things that could hurt my dog. I feel sorry for my dog that has to eat/drink after these birds. The bird droppings are everywhere including in my dogs food and water. I have tried the fake Owls and streamers and nothing works.
