How are birds able to survive in cold weather?
Posted in amazing birds by: adminFebruary 8th, 2010
I’m amazed at how the little birds in my gardens are surviving,
Is there a high survival rate, or do many perish in the winter months?
Thank you for your help ![]()
Most birds are insulated with feathers that keep them warm. They will fluff up their feathers and appear fat to conserve body heat. They also turn their heads backward and tuck them into their feathers and keep one leg up to conserve body heat while sleeping. Wildbirds are very smart and can seek shelter in trees and bushes. Wildbirds are much hardier than you think.

There is a high survival rate. In the twenty plus years my father and I have placed blue bird houses I’ve found only one dead in the house during winter. They have feathers which keep them warm. They have learned [likely from their parents or being with a flock] where to find food and shelter. All wildlife has been cared for by nature, having instincts and hormones to direct their actions.

Apparently (according to the RSPB) millions of birds each year die in the winter because of starvation since they can’t find any food (As the ground is frozen, cant get worms, no fruit on the trees etc)
But it’s a VERY good idea to put out lots of food in the garden, and I put out a bowl of water with a cork in (a ping pong ball works as well) to stop it freezing over, so the birds can get a drink

Birds usually migrate to a warmer place. If they can hack it out where they’re at. than they stay
