It contains the identical scenes — except that it includes the whole un-edited interaction between the bird and trainer, plus all the boring parts (like waiting for the bird to eat her reward, or listening to the trainer say “good girl” several times). I had a close encounter with a small blue-colored bird. It got surprisingly close to me and didn’t fly off at my presence like all the other birds tend to do. I thought it was going to land on me a few times when it flew down to some nearby branches a few feet away from me. It was not afraid to get close to me like some of the other birds. I’m not sure what kind of bird it is. I don’t think it’s a baby Blue Jay. It might possibly be some kind of Finch, House Sparrow or other bird? Maybe some of you all watching know?

UPDATE: I found out what kind of bird it was ( http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20100701232834AAHjy4e&r=w ), a Tufted Titmouse!

There are people who love spending time just watching birds. Others, however, are not content with simply watching the birds and want to capture their flight on film. But taking pictures of birds is not easy work, especially if you want to take pictures of them in flight. Bird photography indeed requires a lot of patience, good reflexes, and a healthy bit of luck. And while professional photographers can spend several days looking for that perfect shot, most of us do not have the luxury of time. So here are some tips that will help you take excellent photos of birds without taking up too much of your time. And yes, these tips will guide you in taking pictures of birds in flight as well.

First, you will have to take your equipment into consideration. If you are using film then you will need one that has a speed of at least 800 to take pictures of birds in flight. Film of lower speed is acceptable if you are planning to take photos only of birds at rest. Another thing you need to remember when taking pictures of birds in flight is that your shutter speed should be adjusted to the fastest that the light will allow. A telephoto lens and zoom lenses are necessary since it is almost impossible to approach birds. You may use a tripod, but make sure that you can easily remove your camera in case you see birds in action elsewhere.

Once your equipment is ready for bird photography, you will have to take note of a few things included in the actual photo. Each type of bird has a distinctive shape and silhouette, and you will need to capture that unique shape in order to make your picture a good one. For example, some birds may look better in a picture when their wings are open, especially if you are photographing them when they are in the sky. You will also have to decide whether you want to focus on the bird alone or give your picture a sense of place. Whatever you decide, bear in mind that a fast shutter speed has the tendency to blur the background.

Remember that everything you see will appear smaller in print, so try to let your subject fill as much of the frame as possible without making the picture too crowded. This is where your telephoto lens will be most useful. Always have an extra ounce of patience in store. Birds have the uncanny tendency to move into the perfect photography angle just as you have given up on it, so this is the best time to remember that patience is a virtue. More importantly, take notes of your bird photography experience. Note which birds are easier to photograph and which ones get startled easily. These little bits of information will be very useful the next time you take out your camera and “shoot” some birds.
