Why do cat’s Make Vocalisations towards Birds or other animals?

all the cat’s i’ve ever seen make these funny sounds when they see birds or other small prey-like animals.
why do they do this?
because how ever cute it is, it has always perplexed me.

it’s a very ancient hunting instinct. they "chirp" and "click" when they’re hunting, play fighting, etc. they also wiggle their butts a little to get some momentum going so they can pounce.

  1. Its a hunting thing, a way of vocalising excitement.

  2. I’ve had two cats 8 1/2 years now and every time they see a bird their mouths move up and down very fast making yakking sounds.

  3. I’ve always heard they are hypnotizing(sp?) them to make them sit still til they catch them… I’ve seen my cats do it w/ flies…

  4. My cat starts to chatter when he sees a bird.

I think he may be trying to tell me that there is a bird nearby without spooking it.
