Why does my amazon bird smell funny?

I have had her bathed professionally, but she has a musky smell that is quite offensive.

Bad new, that is Amazon your smelling, they have a pungent off colored scent to them, it will not go away, it’s just part of an Amazon. All amazons smell that way, some stronger then others.
But it’s normal. Most birds have a similar smell, only fainter. You can buy bird bath at the supply house and that should take it down a bit, but you need to do it daily to make a difference, make sure there are no drafts and it’s not to cool in the room and give him a good spray. That’s what they are doing anyway at the groomers and it’s just not often enough to make a difference. You will never rid her of the odor completely.

  1. No matter what you do, you won’t be able to bathe that smell off of an Amazon. =) That IS their natural odor.

When you say "bathed professionally," i hope you don’t mean someone used any kind of soap on her? That’s a big no-no (for those who don’t know), as it strips their feathers of valuable oils needed to maintain feather health and for grooming.

Amazons just smell musky. That’s all there is to it. You’ll adapt to the scent. Macaws, too, have a very distinct scent. I can *almost* tell the difference from one hookbill to another just by sniffing the feathers. It’s just another wonderful aspect of hookbills.

  2. It may be something in her diet that is giving her such a smell. Try adjusting her diet, and start giving her some fresh veggies and fruits. If she is on an all seed diet, this could also help contribute to her smell.
Although Amazons do have a smell to them, please do NOT use any kind of soap on her. If you’re going to bathe her, use plain water. Soap will strip her feathers of the natural oils that are important for a bird’s well being. Soap may also irritate her skin, in which case you would have a much bigger problem.
You just have to get used to the smell.

    Good luck.

    Good luck.

  4. Amazons do have a natural, musky odor to them. I would recommend an avian vet check if you think it is a different kind of odor or excessive. I agree with the others who have responded, parrots should only be bathed with plain water. I have owned parrots for years and have never heard of a "professional bath" for parrots. Seeing as bathing can be done at home with plain water I think such a thing is probably unnecessary.
